Jesus: I deserved a penalty against Brighton… and our goal is to win the Premier League

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus believes his teammate and compatriot Gabriel Magalhães, returning from injury, added a lot to the back line when he came on against Brighton.

Arsenal managed to defeat Brighton 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday in the 18th round of the English Premier League.

Arsenal’s goals came from Martin Ødegaard and an own goal by Georginio Rotter in the 14th and 52nd minutes, respectively.

Diego Gomes scored Brighton’s goal in the 64th minute.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Jesus said: “I’m very happy and also very excited because there are still many games left.”

He added, “I feel great. After an 11-month absence, I still need some energy, but I’m confident again when I have the ball, and I’m very happy with the way I’ve come back.”

Regarding whether he thought he deserved a penalty, he said, “Personally, I don’t understand why it wasn’t given. I was looking at the ball, but the defender wasn’t even looking at it. In my opinion, it was a foul.”

On his teammate Gabriel’s return from injury, he said, “As everyone saw, his introduction completely changed our defense. We were conceding a lot of chances, but as soon as he came onto the pitch, the difference was clear. He’s a true leader and a fierce defender. His return is a huge boost for us.”

He affirmed, “I’m happy with my strong comeback. I’m here and healthy. I thank God for helping me during these moments. The return was scary; I was afraid I might face some limitations, but thank God.”

He continued: “Everyone knows how difficult it is to play in the Premier League and compete for the top spot. Manchester City have won a lot of titles, and now we are more experienced and have a bigger squad.”

He concluded: “It’s great to be at the top and aiming to win the Premier League. That’s where Arsenal belongs. I hope it happens, and I hope it happens this year.”

The victory lifted Arsenal to 42 points, allowing them to reclaim the top spot after Manchester City’s win over Nottingham Forest.

Brighton remained on 24 points in eleventh place.
