Manchester City eliminates Brentford and advances to the EFL Cup semi-finals

Manchester City overcame Brentford in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, defeating them 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to reach the semi-finals.

Ryan Cherki and Savinho scored City’s goals in the 67th and 32nd minutes, respectively.

A quiet start
Man City manager Pep Guardiola fielded a largely reserve side, opting to rest most of his key players, including Erling Haaland, Josko Gvardiol, Bernardo Silva, and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The first 10 minutes were uneventful, with neither team creating any clear-cut chances.

Khusanov’s escape
Man City waited until the 13th minute to threaten goalkeeper Waldemarsson’s goal. Cherki received a cross on the edge of the penalty area, controlled the ball, and unleashed a powerful shot that went just wide of the post.

Immediately afterward, Oscar Pope also attempted to reach the visitors’ goal after penetrating the penalty area, before unleashing a low shot that Waldemarsson brilliantly saved.

Khusanov almost got the home side sent off in the first quarter of an hour, but escaped with a yellow card after fouling Brentford’s Sheed as he broke through into the penalty area and was about to go one-on-one with James Trafford.

However, Ake’s proximity to the players mitigated the punishment, and the referee only awarded a free kick and booked the Man City defender.

An early blow. Pope suffered an injury after more than a quarter of an hour, forcing Guardiola to substitute him early with Phil Foden, as he was unable to continue on the pitch.

Jensen took the free kick awarded against Khusanov with a superb shot from near the penalty area, but James Trafford’s brilliance prevented it from finding the net.

Savinho then received the ball on the edge of the Brentford penalty area before unleashing a shot that went just wide of the right post.

The Brentford goalkeeper once again prevented Man City from scoring the opening goal, making a fine save from Cherki’s powerful shot from the edge of the box, deflecting it for a corner.

The First Spark
Man City continued their onslaught on the Brentford goal, hoping to take the lead. Rinders came close with a shot after a rebound from the edge of the area, but his effort went over the bar.

This was before Cherki finally broke the deadlock for the Sky Blues, following up a loose ball just outside the penalty area and firing a superb shot into the top right corner of the Brentford net.

Brentford tried to respond, but their attacks never posed a serious threat thanks to the solid Brentford defense, and the first half ended with Man City leading 1-0.

Exchanges of Attacks
Both managers returned from the break with the same starting lineups, with no changes. Man City’s first attempt came from Aurier, whose powerful shot towards the center of the goal was easily saved by Waldemarsson.

Brentford’s goalkeeper then denied Cherki another chance to score, saving another attempt early in the second half.

Brentford’s threat came when Kayode unleashed a shot from the edge of the penalty area, but Trafford made the save.

This was before the Man City goalkeeper was called into action again, this time from Henry, who fired a shot towards the far left corner, but Trafford made a brilliant save.

Possession Without Purpose
After 10 minutes, Brentford took control, with the home side noticeably retreating, but they failed to create any clear-cut chances.

Meanwhile, Man City launched some quick counter-attacks, nearly scoring a second goal. The most notable opportunity came when Foden fired a shot from the heart of the penalty area towards the right corner, but Waldemarsson was equal to the task.

Starting in the 65th minute, Guardiola began substituting several players, bringing on substitutes such as Gvardiol, Núñez, and Silva, replacing Aurélie, Nico González, and Cherki.

The Goal to Confirm Victory
After these three substitutions, Man City added a second goal through Savinho. A brilliant individual effort culminated in a shot that deflected off a defender’s foot and into the net.

Brentford attempted a quick response through Mukassa, whose weak shot from medium range went wide of the Trafford goal.

Savinho threatened Brentford’s goal again with a low shot, but this time Waldemarsson made the save.

The following minutes passed quietly, with Man City maintaining control and Brentford unable to create any real chances to reduce the deficit. The match ended with a victory for the home side, securing their place in the semi-finals.
