Sevilla signs former Chelsea captain

Sevilla have announced the signing of veteran former Spanish international defender César Azpilicueta on a free transfer after his contract with Atlético Madrid expired.

The Andalusian club announced that Azpilicueta, 36, who has participated in three World Cups, has signed a one-year contract with an option for a further season.

Azpilicueta spent 11 seasons with Chelsea between 2012 and 2023, making 508 appearances and winning two Premier League titles and one Champions League, captaining the team to a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the 2021 final. He has also made 44 appearances for the Spanish national team.

Sevilla have not won their first two La Liga matches this season and will face Girona on Sunday in the third round.
