Ter Stegen rejects move to West Ham
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has reportedly turned down the opportunity to move to the Premier League this month, despite falling down the pecking order at the Camp Nou.
The German international is currently under contract with the Catalan giants until the summer of 2028. However, with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Ter Stegen is understood to be weighing up his options to ensure regular first-team football and secure his place in the Germany squad.
Hammers’ Loan Approach Rebuffed
According to Mundo Deportivo, West Ham United made an ambitious move to sign the veteran shot-stopper on a short-term loan deal. The Hammers are reportedly in the market for a new number one following a string of underwhelming performances from both Alphonse Areola and Mads Hermansen so far this term.
TalkSport adds that Julen Lopetegui’s side identified Ter Stegen as the ideal candidate to stabilize their backline during the winter window. However, the 32-year-old has firmly rejected the Hammers’ advances.
Family Ties Outweigh Career Move
Despite the lure of the Premier League and the guarantee of minutes, Ter Stegen’s decision appears to be rooted in personal reasons. It is understood that the goalkeeper is settled in Catalonia and was unwilling to uproot his family.
Sources suggest that the ability to remain close to his two children and maintain his family’s current lifestyle in Barcelona outweighed the sporting benefits of a move to East London. For now, Ter Stegen looks set to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place, or wait for a proposal that better suits both his professional and personal requirements.
