Liverpool’s Slump Continues as Burnley Hold Lacklustre Reds at Anfield
Liverpool’s stuttering form reached a new low on Saturday as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by struggling Burnley, marking their fourth consecutive stalemate in the Premier League.
Despite dominating large spells of the encounter at Anfield, Arne Slot’s men lacked the clinical edge required to dispatch a resilient Clarets side. The result leaves the Reds on 36 points in fourth place, while Burnley pick up a vital point in their survival bid, remaining 19th with 14 points.
First-Half Dominance and Penalty Heartbreak
The hosts started with intent, pinning Burnley back from the opening whistle. Dominik Szoboszlai looked particularly lively, fizzing a dangerous cross across the face of goal that Hugo Ekitike narrowly failed to convert.
The pressure continued to mount as Jeremie Frimpong saw a goal-bound effort deflected wide, before Ryan Gravenberch fired a powerful drive just off-target. Liverpool’s golden opportunity arrived in the 30th minute when Cody Gakpo was brought down in the area. However, Szoboszlai failed to capitalize, rattling his spot-kick against the crossbar to the frustration of the Anfield faithful.
Wirtz Strikes but Burnley Respond
Liverpool eventually broke the deadlock three minutes before the interval. After a direct run from Ekitike, the ball was worked through Curtis Jones to Florian Wirtz, who unleashed a thunderous strike from inside the box that left Martin Dúbravka with no chance.
The complexion of the game shifted after the break as Burnley grew in confidence. The visitors’ improved play was rewarded in the 65th minute when Marcus Edwards latched onto a Florentino Luís pass to slot home his first Premier League goal of the campaign, silencing the home crowd.
Late Frustration for Slot’s Men
Stung by the equalizer, Liverpool threw everything forward in search of a winner. They thought they had found it in the 77th minute when Ekitike found the back of the net, only for the linesman’s flag to cut the celebrations short for offside.
Dúbravka proved to be the hero for the visitors in the closing stages, producing a string of fine saves to deny a desperate Liverpool side. Despite a late barrage of attacks, the Reds couldn’t find a breakthrough, condemned to another afternoon of “what ifs” as they continue to lose ground in the race for the top of the table.
