A humanitarian gesture from Chelsea players towards Jota and his brother Andre

Chelsea players have decided to donate a portion of their FIFA Club World Cup winning bonuses to the families of the late brothers, Diogo Jota and Andre Silva.
Sky Sports confirmed that the Chelsea players and their coach, Enzo Maresca, will receive a bonus of £11.4 million, and that they agreed with the club’s management to donate a portion of it to the players’ families.
It explained that the bonus is part of the £87 million (€100 million) that the London club injected into its coffers after winning the Club World Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Spanish newspaper Marca commented on this humanitarian initiative, saying, “This tragic event (the death of Jota and his brother) could push those who were fierce opponents on the pitch to behave in ways that may be unexpected, but above all, noble and motivating.”
This stance joins a series of initiatives launched across Europe to honor the late Jota, including his club Liverpool’s decision to retire his number 20 shirt, erect a commemorative statue in his honor, and place the slogan “20 Forever” on the team’s shirt throughout the 2025-26 season.
The opening match of the English Premier League, today, Friday, between defending champions Liverpool and visiting Bournemouth, witnessed numerous events to honor Jota and André Silva.
Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva died on July 3, 2025, in a horrific car accident in the province of Zamora, near the Portuguese-Spanish border.
It is worth noting that Chelsea won the title of the first expanded edition of the Club World Cup on July 13, after defeating the European Champions Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final.
Chelsea will begin their new season with a home match against Crystal Palace, the newly crowned FA Community Shield champions, in the opening round of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Sunday at 4:00 PM Mecca and Doha time.
