Petition for Germany-Spain Euro match replay

More than 300,000 people joined an online petition demanding a rematch of the German national team’s match against its Spanish counterpart in the quarter-finals of the European Nations Cup (Euro 2024), due to allegations of refereeing errors, including a handball incident against Mark Cucurella.

Eric Fee, the founder of the petition on the Change.org website, explained this step as being based on “many wrong decisions” by English referee Anthony Taylor during the confrontation that ended with Spain’s 2-1 victory last Friday, after resorting to extra time.

The main incident in this confusion was Jamal Musiala’s shot that touched Cucurella’s hand during extra time, during a 1-1 tie, but Taylor did not award a penalty kick to the machines, and the video assistant referee did not intervene.

This incident caused controversy, but the European Football Association (UEFA) confirmed before the tournament that such incidents, when the arm is “not in an abnormal position,” will not result in a penalty kick.

315,000 people had signed the petition by Sunday morning, but it is a gesture that has a moral impact and nothing more, as the Spanish national team prepares to meet its French counterpart in the semi-finals next Tuesday.
