Barcelona’s night against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League was not a night of joy for Blaugrana fans. The 2-1 defeat in a difficult encounter left a wound in the hearts of fans who had hoped for a triumphant comeback to bolster the team’s continental campaign. However, amidst the shadow of disappointment, a ray of hope emerged for an unprecedented historic achievement, as the men of German coach Hansi Flick succeeded in setting a new record that will remain etched in the club’s memory.

Despite the loss in the score, Barcelona achieved an achievement by scoring their (45)th consecutive match against their opponents. This exceptional record broke a record that had stood for decades, dating back to 1944, when the team scored in (44) consecutive matches. Ferran Torres’ goal against Paris was not enough to avoid defeat, but it was enough to give Barcelona a historic moment as important as the titles.

Since Hansi Flick took over the coaching staff, it has become clear that his philosophy is based on intense attack and high pressure. The German coach, known for his reliance on attacking intensity, brought that approach to Catalonia by employing an “attacking trio” supported by an advanced midfielder, creating a flexible offensive system capable of dismantling opponents’ lines.

This strategy not only yielded numerous goals, but also gave the team a variety of scoring opportunities. Barcelona no longer relies on a single star to make the difference; instead, goals have been distributed among 11 different players since the start of the season. This diversity reflects the team spirit instilled by Flick, with the team operating as a complete offensive unit.

In addition, there has been a noticeable improvement in the exploitation of set pieces. The team, which had suffered from weaknesses in corner kicks and crosses in recent years, now possesses an additional weapon with which to threaten any opponent.

From “Lluís Companys” to the Parisian night

The record didn’t come about by chance. Since the shocking 1-0 loss to Leganés in December 2024 at the “Lluís Companys” stadium, Barcelona has not been able to score. Regardless of the opponent or the competition, whether domestic league, Champions League, or friendly matches, the Catalan team’s goal was never immune to the Catalans’ attacks.

This consistent scoring streak wasn’t just a temporary improvement; it was a long-standing series that proved Flick had succeeded in restoring the attacking identity associated with Barcelona’s golden history, when the team was capable of scoring from any position and on any pitch.

Europe in Focus

The remarkable numbers didn’t stop at domestic competitions. In the Champions League, the competition that measures the strength of the big guns, Barcelona continued to score in every match under Flick’s leadership. This effectiveness against the continent’s toughest defenses reminds fans of the years of dominance, when the team converted almost every chance into a goal.

However, the fact that is not lost on the club’s fans is that numbers alone are not enough. Catalan fans are accustomed to equating joy with titles, and they know that the ultimate goal is to return to the European podium, a position the team has not enjoyed since 2015.

Comparison with Real Madrid

Despite the value of the new record, Barcelona is still far from the Spanish record held by its rival Real Madrid. During Zinedine Zidane’s golden era, between 2016 and 2018, Real Madrid managed to score in (73) consecutive matches, a record that was associated with the team’s most successful period when they won three consecutive Champions League titles.

This achievement was linked to the power of an unforgettable attacking trio: Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who overwhelmed European defenses and ensured that Madrid never left a match empty-handed.

Globally, the record remains elusive, held by Argentine side River Plate, who scored in (93) consecutive matches between 1936 and 1939. This historic achievement spanned three full years, and no club in the world has been able to surpass it to date, remaining a testament to the eternal glory of Latin American football.

Between Numbers and Ambition

Barcelona today stands at a crossroads. On the one hand, it is recording individual and collective achievements in terms of numbers, confirming the return of offensive effectiveness and the development of the system under Flick’s leadership. On the other hand, major challenges still lie ahead: How can he turn these records into championships? And how can he combine offensive creativity with defensive solidity in crucial matches?

The defeat to Paris Saint-Germain was a wake-up call, but it didn’t erase the fact that Flick’s project is making confident strides in reshaping the team’s identity. Only the coming days will tell: Will Barcelona be content with the joy of scoring and the goalscoring numbers, or will this translate into a long-awaited return to continental glory?

An English newspaper report revealed on Wednesday the length of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s absence following his recent injury.

The Liverpool technical staff, led by Dutch coach Arne Slot, are awaiting further details about the severity of Alisson’s injury against Galatasaray in the Champions League, after he was substituted in the second half.

According to Sky Sports, Alisson will be out for a considerable period of time, extending beyond the next international break, according to the initial examination he underwent.

The international break is scheduled to begin after the end of the next round of league matches (the seventh round of the Premier League) and will continue until October 19.

Liverpool will face Manchester United on October 19 after the end of the break.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said after the Galatasaray match: “Alisson felt something. I can’t say exactly because I’m not a physiotherapist.”

The Dutchman added: “Usually when a player feels something and falls to the ground and doesn’t come back on the pitch, it’s bad for him, the team, and the coaching staff.”

He continued: “Alisson won’t be able to play next Saturday against Chelsea. I think so 100%.”

Liverpool will host Chelsea next Saturday at Stamford Bridge in the seventh round of the English Premier League.

Liverpool is expected to rely on new goalkeeper Georgi Mamardashvili, who joined from Valencia, in Alisson’s absence.

Liverpool Staggers

Liverpool continued to stumble after suffering their first Champions League defeat this season, falling 1-0 to Galatasaray on Tuesday evening in the second round of the Premier League.

The Reds lost their last Premier League match last Saturday against Crystal Palace (2-1), marking their second consecutive defeat.

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute from a penalty kick.

Liverpool’s tally remained at 3 points, while the Turkish team achieved its first victory, raising their tally to 3 points.

Although Liverpool still sits atop the Premier League with five wins from six matches, the defeat to the Turkish champions raised questions about the team’s ability to advance beyond the Champions League. Hope certainly remains, but signs of decline have begun to appear early this season.

Last season, the team suffered two consecutive defeats only once, in March, when they were eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain and lost the League Cup final to Newcastle.

But there’s a big difference: the team was on the verge of winning the Premier League title, but now the setback came early, requiring Slott to act quickly ahead of the upcoming match against Chelsea.

After a sufficient number of matches, in which Liverpool failed to fully dominate most of the teams they faced, the team’s problems have become increasingly apparent.

Excessive Rotation

After a massive £449 million investment in the summer transfer window, Slott promised to utilize his squad more deeply this season, and he has delivered. One of the reasons for the team’s decline at the end of last season was fatigue resulting from relying on a limited group of players.

In Istanbul, Slott decided to field Hugo Ekitike, Jeremy Frienbong, Cody Gakpo, and Curtis Jones instead of Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley, Mac Allister, and Mohamed Salah.

This was the first time Mohamed Salah was left out of a crucial Champions League match since 2022, when he scored a hat-trick as a substitute against Rangers. Taking the Egyptian star out of the close season was not a good idea.

In his first season, Arne Slot benefited from the stability of the squad he inherited from German coach Jürgen Klopp. This time, the challenge is completely different. The numerous changes have left the team seemingly disjointed, and the cohesion on the pitch has yet to develop.

The constant rotation of new signings could complicate the process of integrating the players, but Slot justifies this by saying he does not want to overwork players who have not had a full pre-season, such as Alexander Isak, Bradley, and Mac Allister.

Arne Slot firmly believes that having a large number of players makes it difficult to manage the team, but he now faces a real challenge in finding the balance between maintaining fitness and stabilizing the squad.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick announced the team’s squad for the match against Paris Saint-Germain this evening, Wednesday, at the Olympique Lluís Companys Stadium in the second round of the Champions League group stage.

The squad includes the return of left-back Alejandro Balde, who received medical clearance this afternoon after recovering from a left hamstring injury he sustained on September 3 during training at the Ciutat de Sant Joan Despí.

Balde has since missed five matches: four in La Liga (Valencia, Getafe, Oviedo, Real Sociedad) and one in the Champions League against Newcastle.

Despite Balde’s return, Barcelona continues to suffer from several significant absences, most notably: Marc-André ter Stegen (long-term injury), Juan Garcia, Gavi, Fermin López, and Rafinha.

Barcelona began their European campaign with a valuable 2-1 away victory over Newcastle United, thanks to a Marcus Rashford brace, establishing themselves as a strong contender to challenge Paris Saint-Germain for the group lead in an early clash between two of the most prominent contenders to win the continental title next May.

Nottingham Forest announced in the early hours of Tuesday the dismissal of Portuguese manager Nuno Espirito Santo, making him the first manager to be sacked in the Premier League for the 2025-26 season, after a 21-month tenure.

The club’s statement read: “Nottingham Forest can confirm that Nuno Espirito Santo has been relieved of his duties as manager due to recent circumstances. The club thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful era, particularly his role in the 2024-25 season, which will remain etched in the club’s history.”

Nuno, 51, took over as Forest manager in December 2023, succeeding Steve Cooper, and successfully saved the team from relegation.

Last season, he led the team to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League, the club’s best finish since the 1994-95 season, securing their first European berth in 30 years in the Europa League, after Crystal Palace were disqualified for breaching UEFA’s multiple ownership rules.

The statement added: “Nuno played a significant role in our success last season and will always hold a special place in our journey.”

However, Nuno’s relationship with the club’s owner, Greek billionaire Evangelos Marinakis, has deteriorated recently, contributing to his dismissal.

Nottingham Forest currently sits tenth in the league with four points from three matches, but their recent 3-0 defeat to West Ham hastened Nuno’s departure.

British media reports indicate that the club has begun immediate talks to appoint a new coach, with Australian Ange Postecoglou, the former Tottenham manager, at the top of the list, along with Austrian Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace manager) and Spaniard Andoni Iraiola (Bournemouth manager).

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand expressed his great relief after Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana’s loan move to Trabzonspor, stressing that the club had taken a decisive step in removing a “bad odor” that had threatened the dressing room atmosphere.

Onana, 28, joined United in the summer of 2023 from Inter Milan for £47 million, but failed to perform as expected, with fatal errors over two seasons causing him to lose his starting spot.

Coach Ruben Amorim decided to rely on Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in goal for the first three league matches of the season.

With the arrival of young Belgian goalkeeper Seneh Lammens from Royal Antwerp in the final days of the transfer window, Onana’s departure became imminent.

Trabzonspor moved quickly to complete a loan deal with United, which included covering Onana’s full salary and bonuses, making his income nearly double what he was earning at Old Trafford.

In statements on his YouTube show, Ferdinand said: “There is no debate about Onana’s departure. The club’s management has made it clear that they will not tolerate players who do not deserve their place. The era of keeping players who do not perform at the required level or lack the right character for Manchester United is over.”

He added: “For years, we have suffered from players who were a bad smell within the team due to financial mismanagement. Now, things have changed, and Onana’s departure is clear evidence that the club no longer compromises. If you are not up to the task, you will leave immediately.”

The summer transfer window saw the departure of several prominent players from Old Trafford, such as Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho, as part of a comprehensive rebuilding plan led by Amorim and the club’s management.

Ferdinand concluded: “I’m pleased with the new signings who have added pace, energy and attacking threat, but I’m even happier with the way the club has gotten rid of the wrong players. That’s the strongest message: there’s no place at Manchester United for anyone who doesn’t perform up to the standards we’ve set ourselves.”

From the moment Real Madrid announced the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer, it was clear that the deal would not go unnoticed. The English star, who spent more than a decade with Liverpool, left behind a legacy full of memories and trophies, beginning a new chapter in Madrid, where the pressure is greater and the spotlight is brighter.

The decision was not easy for the player. He had previously admitted that it was one of the most difficult choices of his life, affirming that Liverpool would remain his eternal home. However, he felt the time had come to take on a different challenge in a European environment capable of fulfilling his individual ambitions, most notably competing for the Ballon d’Or.

Even in small details, such as shortening his name to “Trent” on the shirt, it seemed as though he wanted to turn a new page, far removed from his English past, indicating his awareness that life in Madrid required a fresh start free of the shadows of the past.

A Difficult Start

However, this start was not without its challenges. From his first matches, he found himself under the scrutiny of the Spanish press, especially after his appearance in the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal, where his performance was described as “mediocre defensively,” sparking widespread debate about his ability to fill the void left by Dani Carvajal.

The Spanish press did not hesitate to criticize him, arguing that his outstanding offensive skills were not enough to compensate for his defensive fragility. However, some responses later confirmed that Trent was capable of adding value in attacking and playmaking, as demonstrated against Pachuca when he provided assists and a more balanced performance.

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso clearly defended him, stating that Trent is not just a full-back, but an additional midfielder capable of giving the team different dimensions. This revealed a long-term plan aimed at exploiting the player’s unique qualities, even if it sparked controversy.

Exceptional Circumstances

It’s worth noting that signing Arnold wasn’t Madrid’s top priority. Spanish reports revealed that Reece James was the primary target, but the contractual circumstances, Trent’s leadership skills, and his friendship with Jude Bellingham tipped the scales in favor of him, making his presence in the Los Blancos squad a reality.

However, Carvajal’s recent return from injury has put the Englishman directly under threat for his starting spot. Carvajal is considered one of the team’s historic leaders and has extensive experience in handling big matches. This could force Alonso to rotate positions between the two depending on the opposition, putting Trent under increased pressure to prove his worthiness to continue as a starter.

Arnold has played three La Liga matches since the start of the season, yet has neither assisted nor scored a goal.

Tuchel’s Blow

Just as he was beginning to get used to the Spanish atmosphere, the biggest blow came from England when German coach Thomas Tuchel announced his exclusion from the squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.

The decision sparked widespread controversy, with the English press viewing it as a harsh message to the player. Tuchel justified the move by citing fierce competition for the right-back position, and his preference for Reece James and Tino Livramento for their greater defensive solidity. He emphasized that a defensive error at a major tournament could be disastrous.

British newspapers explained that the direct reason was Tuchel’s conviction that Trent was overemphasizing his attacking roles at the expense of his defensive duties, which could expose the national team to unforeseen risks.

Between the criticism of the English public and the aspirations of Real Madrid fans, Trent finds himself at a crossroads today, between the dream of proving himself in Madrid and the challenge of returning to the national team.

While the Spanish press is following his news as a sensational story, his character and ambition remain the true weapons to face these enormous pressures. Either he succeeds in writing a new golden chapter with Real Madrid, or his move becomes a temporary stop in his football career.

Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, the current coach of the United States national team, revealed the details behind the failure of his previous move to coach Real Madrid, indicating that his commitment to Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was the main reason behind the failure of the negotiations.

Pochettino told the Spanish program “El Chiringuito”: “As a player, I had the opportunity to join Real Madrid, but it didn’t happen. As a coach, I also had more than one opportunity, but football depends on timing and circumstances.”

He added: “After Zinedine Zidane left, there was a real possibility of me taking over at Real Madrid. I told Levy at the time that I would go if he gave me his approval, but he didn’t give the green light. I was bound by a contract, and I wasn’t free to make my own decision.”

He continued: “I don’t know how Florentino Perez took it, but the situation was not in my hands. I gave Levi my word that I would stay until the new Tottenham stadium was completed, and I am a person who keeps my promises. Maybe the time wasn’t right then, but as they say: it’s never too late if the opportunity arises again.”

Turkish club Besiktas has requested to sign Senegalese star Sadio Mane, Al-Nassr’s star, during the current summer transfer window, according to press reports.

The Saudi newspaper Al-Youm reported on Wednesday, citing Turkish press reports, that Besiktas had entered into negotiations with Al-Nassr, but Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus rejected the offer and insisted on Mane’s presence on the team.

Jesus relied on Mane in his first official match of the season, against Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Super Cup semi-final, but he was sent off after scoring the opening goal.

The Senegalese star returned to play against Al-Taawoun in the first round of the Saudi League, and was the only one of the attacking quartet who failed to score.

Mane has played for Al-Nassr since joining from Liverpool in the summer of 2023, making 95 appearances, scoring 28 goals and assisting 26.
