PSG crushes Milan and takes the lead.. and Barcelona continues victories
The Spanish club Barcelona achieved a valuable victory over its Ukrainian guest, Shakhtar, with a score of 2-1, in the match that was held on Wednesday evening at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium, for the third round of the Group H competitions of the 2023-2024 European Champions League.
Barcelona started the match very calmly, and controlled the field completely, until Ferran Torres was able to open the scoring in the 28th minute after a shot from Fermin Lopez hit the crossbar and rebounded to Torres, who shot a powerful ball into the goal.
Torres decided to quickly return the gift to the young midfielder, providing him with a decisive pass that helped him add the second goal for the Catalan club in the 36th minute of the match.
Barcelona decided to calm down in the second half, in order to exit the match with the least possible losses, less than 72 hours before facing Real Madrid in El Clásico.
But that calm cost coach Xavi Hernandez’s team dearly, as Giorgi Sudakov was able to reduce the deficit for Shakhtar in the 62nd minute, with a stunning shot from inside the penalty area.
The match continued hotly for the remainder of its events, amid attempts by Barcelona to consolidate the lead, and counterattacks from Shakhtar players in an attempt to equalize.
For the same group, Porto of Portugal achieved a huge victory away from home over Royal Antwerp of Belgium with a score of 4-1, taking an important step closer to accompanying Barcelona to the round of sixteen.
The victory raised Porto’s tally to 6 points in second place, three points behind leaders Barcelona, while Shakhtar occupies third place with 3 points, and Royal Antwerp is at the bottom of the group without a score.
In another match held at the same time, the Dutch club Feyenoord was able to achieve a major victory over the Italian Lazio, for the fifth group competitions.
Mexican Santi Jimenez scored a brace for Feyenoord, while Algerian midfielder Ramez Zerrogui scored the third goal, while veteran Spanish Pedro scored Lazio’s only goal.
Also for Group E, Scottish club Celtic earned its first point in the current edition of the group stage, with an exciting positive draw of 2-2 with Atletico Madrid of Spain.
With this result, Feyenoord leads the group standings with 6 points, Atletico Madrid comes second with 5 points, while Lazio occupies third place with 4 points, and Celtic is at the bottom of the group standings with one point.
In Group F, Paris Saint-Germain achieved a broad victory over Italian Milan, 3-0, in the match that was held at the “Parc des Princes” stadium in the French capital.
Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for Paris Saint-Germain in the 32nd minute, before Randall Kolo Mwani took advantage of a shot that bounced off the Milan goalkeeper to put the ball into the net in the 53rd minute, before Korean Lee Kang-in concluded the match’s goals in the 89th minute.
While Borussia Dortmund returned with full points from St. James Park, the home of Newcastle United, after the German club managed to achieve victory with an unanswered goal, scored by midfielder Felix Nemcha.
Thus, Paris Saint-Germain leads the group standings with a score of sixth in the 2023-2024 Champions League with 6 points, and Borussia Dortmund comes second with 4 points, the same score as Newcastle United, third, while Milan is at the bottom of the standings of the group teams with two points.
As for the seventh group, Manchester City had little difficulty in overcoming the Swiss team, Young Boys, with a score of 3-1.
Manuel Akanji scored a goal and Erling Haaland added a brace, bringing Manchester City to 9 points at the top of the group.
While German Leipzig achieved a valuable victory over Serbian Red Star, also with a score of 3-1, raising its score to 6 points in second place, while Young Boys and Red Star stopped at one point, in third and fourth places, respectively.
