Liverpool comments on the scandal of Luis Diaz’s canceled goal vs Tottenham
Liverpool FC issued a fiery statement in response to the apology of the Referees Committee of the English Football Association, after it acknowledged the error committed by the video technology referees during the “Reds” match against Tottenham in the seventh round of the 2023-2024 season of the English Premier League.
Liverpool lost at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by two goals to one, and the match witnessed the expulsion of two Liverpool players, in addition to the cancellation of a valid goal due to Luis Diaz being offside in the first half.
Liverpool decided to respond in an official statement on its website to the apology of the referees’ committee led by Howard Webb, after the grave refereeing error.
The statement read: “Liverpool Football Club acknowledges that the Referees Committee admitted the failure last night, and it is clear that the correct application of the Laws of the Game did not occur, which led to a violation of sporting integrity.”

He added: “We fully accept the pressures under which match referees work, but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, through the presence and application of video assistant referee technology.”
He continued: “Therefore, it is unsatisfactory not to allow sufficient time to allow the correct decision to be made and for no subsequent intervention to occur.”
He continued: “Categorizing such failures as ‘major human error’ is also unacceptable, and any outcome should only be determined through review and with complete transparency.”
“This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs where lessons learned are used to make improvements to operations in order to ensure this type of situation does not occur again.”
The statement concluded: “In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, in light of the clear need for escalation and resolution.”
