Guardiola issues a warning to Manchester City after a brutal Champions League victory against Bayern Munich

Despite a merciless performance against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the uefa champions league quarterfinals, Pep Guardiola told his Manchester City players that they still had work to do.

Looking to win the Champions League for the first time, City took a big step towards the semi-finals by defeating Bayern Munich 3-0 at the Etihad.

Rodri put the hosts ahead with a spectacular curling strike from distance, before Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland extended the lead after the break as Bayern were punished for some sloppy defending.

City are now heavy favourites to complete the job in Munich next week, as long as they avoid a three-goal defeat at the Allianz Arena, with Real Madrid or Chelsea waiting in the last four if Guardiola’s side progresses as expected.

City manager believes the Bundesliga leaders, a team he oversaw for three seasons, are more than capable of making a comeback at home and said Bayern were “better than us” during spells at the Etihad.

Guardiola told BT Sport, “When you are there, you realise how good they are as a team.”

“It was a close, tight contest for 55 to 60 minutes. They were better than us in many instances, but after 65 minutes, we scored the second goal, which greatly aided our cause”.

“After making certain adjustments, our pressing became more successful. They discovered Musiala, and what an exceptional player  he is. And Gnabry, be aware of the threat posed by Coman and Leroy who are following closely. It’s quite challenging”.

“I’m happy with the results, although I spent three years living in Munich. I am familiar with the mentality and capabilities of Bayern Munich. There is still a formidable game to play”.
