Gary Lineker wins .. “BBC” apologizes and announces his return to present his program
The BBC has apologized to Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker and allowed him to tweet via his social media accounts without restriction.
The former English star found himself caught up in a storm on social media over the past few days, after he criticized the British government via his Twitter account.
After the BBC ordered him to apologize for his actions, Lineker refused to do so, and the BBC suspended him.
Lineker found massive support from his BBC colleagues as they launched a series of unprecedented strikes, and there was no comment or discussion across the BBC’s coverage of the matches at the weekend.
“Everyone knows this has been a difficult period for the staff, shareholders, presenters and most importantly our fans, for this I apologize,” said a statement from BBC Director General Tim Davie on Lineker’s return to the screen.
He added: “It is a result of potential confusion caused by the gray areas of the BBC’s social media guidelines which were introduced in 2020. I would like to work things out and get sports content back on the air. Impartiality is important to the BBC and the public.”
He added: “Accordingly, we are announcing a review led by an independent expert – who is reporting to the BBC – on existing social media guidelines, with a particular focus on how it applies to freelancers outside of news and current affairs. The BBC and I recognize that Gary endorse such a review.
He added: “Gary is an important part of the BBC and I know what the BBC means to him and I look forward to bringing our coverage this coming weekend.”
For his part, Lineker responded to the statement, saying: “I am glad that we have found a way forward. I support this review and look forward to getting back on the air.”
